Relegating the Cross to Easter
It took a long time, but we have finally squeezed the cross into a box. Rather than the explosion that is sending a tidal wave of reality changing impact forward and backwards in time, we are binding up the cross effectively into the 4 days from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday. It now requires only a head nod of honor, via pastel dress shirts, and baskets with green plastic grass.
We all, walking with God daily, sense that it isn’t right. Our buttoned up Easter celebrations, doesn’t jive with the soul shaking reality of the cross. Still, we will write blogs, and put snippets on Facebook, pointing out pieces of the gospel. They will say things like,"This Easter, reflect on the impact of these scriptures in your life.” Implying that all we need is a little tune up in relation to the cross. The Christian cultural implication being that we are pretty healthy. That we are living well in light of the cross. When in reality what is intended to be our daily obsession has become a yearly genuflection. The impact? Our cultural experience of the resurrection is peashooter sized. Corporately we aren’t bracing for the impact.
It is significant to ask, “What cost do we pay, when we minimize the gospel?” We "remember"and "reflect" on the gospel, but we also need to stand awestruck before the tidal wave of Christ’s finished work that has such an "energy potential" in our daily lives!
Because of the cross, we live in redemptive time every day. Pain is temporary, His redemption is at work everywhere!
We awake each day with the opportunity to make deeper use, by faith, of His righteousness! We need a right perspective on Christ and His work. Let’s not assign it a place at the beginning of our spiritual blueprint for discipleship. Rather make it the classroom of ALL our disciplemaking activities. I need you, as my discipler this Easter, to reflect to me the awesomeness of this moment. To help me give it rightful place in my life.
